Model Train Layouts & Track Plans

The layout is designed completely with Kato N Unitrack sectional tracks, with exception of one flex track and two Bachmann 30deg crossings. It is intended to be DCC controlled by one operator with up to 4 simultaneously running trains. The project has plenty of nice 3D details included – starting from the different types and models of rolling stock, passing through buildings, structures, cars and trucks and finishing with the small ducks in the lake and even smoke, coming out from the chimneys of one factory. Some of these are borrowed from another, already published SCARM projects, but most are designed with the figures in SCARM by Robert himself.

Lower Level

The lower level has 3 main areas. The top area on the 2D plan contains the yard in the middle with the turntable and the roundhouse on the left side and the passenger train station on the right side. The middle area (the peninsula) represents a mountain scene with forest and lake, together with oil refinery in the valley. The bottom area is intended to be a hidden pass for the double main line to the upper level.

Upper Level

The upper level consists of two areas and (currently) open part above the yard from the lower level. Both areas (the peninsula and the bottom part on the 2D plan) are designed with various industries on them, including a grain elevator, coal mine and several factories. Parts of a town and also a small village are visible on the right sides of both areas.

• The ZIP file contains separated .scarm project files for both levels as well as one complete file with the whole track plan. Separated files are suitable for easier viewing and understanding of the concept, while the complete file can be used for simulation of the layout with the Model Trains Simulator.

• Due to the large area occupied of the track plan and the presence of many details (tracks, figures and objects) on two levels, the terrain generation for the 3D viewer of SCARM may be too slow with the default settings. In order to speed-up the terrain rendering in 3D viewing mode, you can change the settings from “Tools” > “Settings” > “3D View” > “Baseboard” > “Rendering quality (speed)”, using the option “Average (very fast)” in the drop-down list

• The current version of SCARM cannot render correctly the terrain for a layout with two or more scenic levels that are positioned one over another. If you want to view and/or simulate the compete layout and all track routes in 3D viewing mode, it may be better to turn off the terrain generation from the settings (see above) for that project and even perform manually remove of (some) figures and objects that may obstruct the view.

• Check also the notes, included in the “Legend” layer of the project for additional information and details about the design.
