Layouts can vary by "type" of the track plans. There are several basic types and type combinations than can be seen.

Closed route. This type represents a track plan with closed train line (i.e. in oval) where the trains can run continuously.

Pros - Small space requirements.
Cons - Far from the reality.

Point to point. This type represents a track plan with at least two terminus train stations. The train can run from one station to another where it stops and then the loco needs to be reversed or replaced by another with shunting/switching operation.

Pros - Closer to the real world.
Cons - More space required for better realism.

Complex. This type is mixture of the two mentioned above and represents a track plan that has a closed route, combined with open parts, that ends with terminus stations. The trains can run between the stations or continuously in the loop.

Pros - More playing options and running scenarios.
Cons - More space required for better realism.

Station/Yard. This type represents a train station or loco/coach yard (or part of these) where mostly shunting/switching operations can be performed.

Pros - May be realised compact (as a shelf) but close to reality.
Cons - Limited to shunting/switching operations and scenarios.

Modular. This is actually an additional sub-type and can be applied to any of the layout types, mentioned above. It means that the track plan is divided into single modules for easy building and/or transportation.

Pros - Enables easy transportation when needed.
Cons - May require additional construction skills for building/matching of each modular part.

Single module. This is another additional sub-type and can be applied to any of the layout types, mentioned above. It means that the track plan is part of a bigger modular layout in a large track plan scheme.

Pros - Enables easy storage and transportation when needed.
Cons - Cannot be used without the other modules from the project.

Diorama/Display. This is a kind of display layout which is used mostly for exhibition purposes. It can be either static or fully operational and the most important is representation of a given scene with all possible details.
