Description
Here is what Mike says about the construction of this layout:
"The outdoor project is built adjacent to our club room on a farm in South Warwickshire. The track is 45mm Gauge 1 which allows the operation of Gauge 1 locomotives and stock (either 10mm:foot or 1/32nd), G scale (typically garden railway at 1/29th scale) and narrow gauge that can be regauged from 32mm to 45mm. We have run coal fired, spirit fired and gas fired live steam and of course battery powered locos all of which can be radio controlled as well although most drivers choose to control their locos direct.
A small group of modellers from the club (who happened to be N Gauge modellers who met on Zoom during lockdown) put a proposal to the Board of the club for some "seed funding" and when approved we negotiated with the farmer to licence the land. Each of us in the core team also made a significant financial contribution to the project to bring it to reality. The construction team of five started on March 21st 2022 and completed the construction and track laying 51 weeks later.
All of us learned new construction skills from one member who is a retired builder. This involved digging all the holes for the 53 concrete posts by hand, mixing concrete, moving stone for the paths (on one day, three of us shifted 10 tons of stone by hand). The top surface is 18mm ply wood covered with flamed-on roofing felt.
I led the track laying team to ensure that minimum spacing and the specified radii were maintained throughout. I was also responsible for the design and manufacture of the access bridge at the front of the photograph. It hinges at one end with an off-set hinge and has a pair of gas struts to assist with a opening and closing (much like a tail-gate on a car).
Using SCARM enabled me to lay out the track plan to gain agreement from my colleagues and determine the overall cost of the track components."
